EXTRA! What Are Extra Care Up To Now?
We have an exciting piece of news for you this week. After a long time coming, a retirement village is finally due to be built in Solihull, offering over 200 new places for elderly people to live. Solihull, Birmingham, is typically an area for young professionals, couples and small families, but there seems to be plans to help change this in the coming months.
New developments have been finalised for the regeneration of a disused site which has been neglected and forgotten for the last two decades. In the hope of attracting another generation to Solihull, developers plan to tear down a John Maiden building on Stratford Road and replace it with a retirement village.
Delays caused by technical and even legal issues have prevented the plans from going ahead up until now, but everything is back under control and bulldozers are due to close in on the site in a few weeks’ time. Once the demolishing has happened, the building will progress, creating a unit of 261 homes.
What extras do Extra Care give?
The reason why this new building project is so important, is down to the charity behind it. ExtraCare is a leading organisation in elderly care, offering numerous services and aides to make the life of those less able as comfortable as possible. With multiple locations with villages already standing in good reputation, they have a lot of experience to help support this new area.
The assistance each individual in the care villages needs is determined before they move in, after a discussion with a social worker. This is to make sure each new resident is gaining the right amount of help from day one. The extra help includes:
– getting in and out of bed, if needed
– taking care of personal hygiene, including full bathing
– dressing, including picking out clothes and putting them on
– medication support and assistance
– psychological support, including specialist acre with dementia-related condition.
“And the winner is…”
What makes this project even more attractive, is the proof of how well ExtraCare look after their residents through the awards they have won. They have been awarded with Outstanding approach to Innovation with the 2016 UK Housing Awards. This is an incredible achievement, because it shows they cover all the bases and do not cut any corners.
They have also won Gold Status for Investors in People. This was given for their exceptional practice in engagement with the staff, training and supporting both paid workers and volunteers, helping them to engage with the residents and commit to their job. This would be a huge draw for potential buyers, because it shows how seriously the staff take their positions – you would be in good hands.
The first of these ExtraCare homes will be finished and available to buyers in October. The whole village is hopefully to be completed by 2020, if everything goes according to plan. Until then, retired buyers with their hearts set on the new location will have to keep a close eye on the building work.
